Lyrics:
Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleeping
We could dream this night away
But there’s a full moon rising
Let’s go dancing in the light
We know where the music’s playing
Let’s go out and feel the night

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart
But now it’s getting late
And the moon is climbing high
I want to celebrate
See it shining in your eye

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon

ACLU Defends Nazis’ Right To Burn Down ACLU Headquarters (The Onion, October 14, 2003)

NEW YORK—At a press conference Monday, American Civil Liberties Union officials announced that the organization will go to court to defend a neo-Nazi group’s right to burn down ACLU headquarters.

ACLU president Nadine Strossen told reporters that her organization intends to “vigorously and passionately defend” the Georgia chapter of the American Nazi Party’s First Amendment right to freely express its hatred of the ACLU by setting its New York office ablaze on Nov. 25.

“I am reminded of the words of Voltaire: ‘I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,’” Strossen said. “While the ACLU vehemently disagrees with the idea of Nazis torching this building, the principle of freedom of expression must be supported in all cases. If we take away these Nazis’ right to burn down our headquarters, we take away everyone’s right to burn down our headquarters.”

I would laugh but they probably would do just that. If you can defend a violence-promoting, dangerous racist like Trump, you can defend anyone. Were they sleeping when he incited a whole insurrection?

Public school in Georgia (Hemant Mehta at Only Sky)

Earlier this month, Victoria Rose Waldrip (a.k.a. Woah Vicky, “Atlanta’s new age trap queen”) visited Jonesboro High School in Georgia and preached to the girl’s basketball team. She told them to accept Jesus, promoted her church, told the girls to remain celibate until marriage, and lied about LGBTQ people.

When one girl asked her if being gay was bad, Waldrip said she couldn’t answer the question because she’s not God. She then added there was no such thing as a gay preacher (which is a lie), and said people become gay as a result of getting “touched on” (which is also a lie), and said being gay is like murdering people because they’re both sins (which even most Christians would say is a lie because they don’t think being gay is a sin). And then she praised Jeffrey Dahmer for supposedly discovering God in prison.

You better believe there’s video of it. (The anti-gay stuff begins around the 13:20 mark.)
YouTube video

It raises all kinds of questions for the school: What the hell was she doing there? Who invited her? Why would anyone think this was a good idea?! That’s what @capn_cut_throat and @deconversiontherapy wanted to know when their videos about the matter began picking up steam on TikTok.

Keep in mind that this wasn’t a voluntary event where students were told what they’d hear in advance. In fact, some of the girls later “expressed their outrage” online.

*more*

Why did a high school let controversial influencer Woah Vicky preach to kids? (January 26, 2023)

Video shows media personality Woah Vicky lying to kids about LGBTQ people, while urging them to accept Jesus. Several students complained to the Freedom from Religion Foundation, which is now engaged with the school to get to the bottom of this.

It appears this woman was invited by someone who is not associated with the school.

It turns out we do know who’s responsible for this: Frances Miller, a “digital creator” who works as a “character coach” for the team and promotes them on social media. She’s seen in the background of the video. (One source told me that Miller has no official connection with the district.)

Miller bragged about the proselytizing as soon as it happened:

If, in fact, Miller’s role is unofficial, then her access to students—and how she used that opening to get her friend to push Jesus on them—is especially troubling.

Why Comic Sans should be the official Army font

The U.S. Army has a regulation for everything — braid styles, hands in pockets, colors and types of acceptable pens. The list even includes a font specification for professional correspondence — Arial, size 12.

According to Army Regulation 25-50, section 1-19 of “Preparing and Managing Correspondence,” which specifies type fonts and sizes, the cliché sans serif lettering is preferred, which, if you know anything about the Army, essentially means it’s mandatory.

“Use type fonts and sizes that make the correspondence easy to read and understand,” the regulation reads. “Preferred type font is Arial. Unusual type styles, such as Script, will not be used in official correspondence.”

But unusual beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And Comic Sans, neither script nor odd, should be in the running for the official Army font.

It is simplistic, nostalgic, aesthetically pleasing and easily enjoyed by everyone and anyone with even a smidge of reading skill. Crayon eaters can attest, it is the best.

An “anti-crime” unit when one of the most common lines we hear when it’s learned that the cops allowed a crime to continue until someone was injured or killed is “Cops aren’t paid to prevent crimes, they’re there to arrest the criminals!” Probably because police departments have a history of interpreting “anti-crime” as “arrest anybody who looks at you funny and come up with the charges later.”

ATLANTA - For the second day in a row, a group of Georgians gathered in Downtown Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park to protest the murder of Tyre Nichols. The 29-year-old man was beaten to near death by five Memphis police officers. With two peaceful demonstrations under their belt, some protestors have expressed a concern against the presence of Georgia’s National Guard.

“It’s important to demonstrate solidarity and demand justice for Tyre Nichols and all victims of police violence,” said Natalie Villasana.

Villasana is a part of the group that organized the two protests. The organization said more people would have come out if it were not for Governor Brian Kemp declaring a State of Emergency and calling up the National Guard.

Yeah, I’ve seen this song and dance enough times to know that he’s gonna slag the hotel in his review almost immediately after he leaves. Odds are he’ll just accuse you of being “rude” and whine about how the policy is “unfair” because his little entitled ass thinks his rental fee means he should have access to all amenities 24/7. But don’t put it past him to go totally loony tunes if he thinks it’ll get him some sort of compensation while customer service “investigates” his claims.

As to opposed to our system of law enforcement in America, where decades of demanding hard numbers as evidence of police efficiency has bred a culture that puts number arrests over other considerations, so that using unnecessary force to drag in a man for selling loosie cigarettes is a totally valid use of police resources because it contributes to that month’s quotas.

It’s a phenomenon of reality that is known only through modern physics.

And only lately (the past few decades) have experiments that can make for demonstrations to the layman become possible.

See here:

Entangled photons make a picture from a paradox

The essential nature of reality is that said reality is best described as waves that can be entangled, or not. This is something completely foreign to human understanding before the 20th century.

Russian presidential Mi-8 helicopter crashes in Moscow (AeroTime, January 27, 2023)

The Mil Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Russian Special Flight Detachment ‘Rossiya’ has crashed in Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport (VKO) on January 27, 2023.

According to Russian media, the helicopter crashed during landing, resulting in several casualties.

The Special Flight Detachment ‘Rossiya’ is a company that operates a fleet of VIP aircraft used for transporting Russian government officials, including the country’s president Vladimir Putin.

According to Russian news agency Interfax, the helicopter struck the ground with its blades and tail while landing.

Interfax also quotes emergency services as saying that the accident resulted in casualties. However, the airport authorities have denied that anybody was harmed in the crash, Interfax added.

Russian Telegram channel Mash shared a photo of what it claims to be the aftermath of the crash. In it, a Mi-8 helicopter in the livery of ‘Rossiya’ can be seen. The helicopter’s tail rotor blades appear to have been sheared off.

In Mash’s photo, the tail number of the helicopter is blurred away. Data from adsbexchange.com shows only three AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters of ‘Rossiya’ conducting flights around VKO between the morning and afternoon of January 27, meaning that the Mi-8 in question most likely flew with its transponder turned off.

Canadian police chiefs speak out on death of Black man beaten by U.S. officers (CTV News)

Canadian police chiefs condemned on Friday the death of a Black man who was savagely beaten by police during a traffic stop in the United States, saying the officers involved must be held accountable.

The condemnation of the actions that led to Tyre Nichols’ death came as authorities in Memphis, Tenn., released a video of what happened.

The footage shows officers holding Nichols down and striking him repeatedly as he screamed for his mother.

After the beating, officers milled about for several minutes while Nichols lay propped up against a car, then slumped onto the street.

DirecTV announced Thursday it will replace Newsmax with another right-wing TV station. Word of the satellite service provider’s new partnership comes after Newsmax — which was dropped from DirecTV’s lineup at the stroke of midnight Wednesday — whined it was a victim of “political discrimination and censorship.”

“DIRECTV will launch conservative opinion and commentary network The First across all three of its video services … very soon,” DirecTV said in a statement.

Fox News castaway Bill O’Reilly and Donald Trump sycophant Liz Wheeler, formerly of OAN, lead The First’s lineup of talent, which also includes former Breitbart editor Dana Loesch. Adding insult to injury, The Daily Beast reports The First will take over the very channel formerly occupied by Newsmax.

I’m assuming that they’re changing the low power setting to be the default, and that’s what the outrage is about. Wingnuts can’t stay on the same grift too long; eventually it sounds ridiculous even to the true believers, if they let it cook for too long. The key to wingnut grift is to always be jumping between outrages, even if it means reusing old grievances.

How Barr’s Quest to Find Flaws in the Russia Inquiry Unraveled (New York Times, January 26, 2023)

TL;DR, Durham’s investigation veered into investigating crimes by Donald Trump. That couldn’t be allowed.

Mr. Barr and Mr. Durham never disclosed that their inquiry expanded in the fall of 2019, based on a tip from Italian officials, to include a criminal investigation into suspicious financial dealings related to Mr. Trump. The specifics of the tip and how they handled the investigation remain unclear, but Mr. Durham brought no charges over it.

Mr. Durham used Russian intelligence memos — suspected by other U.S. officials of containing disinformation — to gain access to emails of an aide to George Soros, the financier and philanthropist who is a favorite target of the American right and Russian state media. Mr. Durham used grand jury powers to keep pursuing the emails even after a judge twice rejected his request for access to them. The emails yielded no evidence that Mr. Durham has cited in any case he pursued.

There were deeper internal fractures on the Durham team than previously known. The publicly unexplained resignation in 2020 of his No. 2 and longtime aide, Nora R. Dannehy, was the culmination of a series of disputes between them over prosecutorial ethics. A year later, two more prosecutors strongly objected to plans to indict a lawyer with ties to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign based on evidence they warned was too flimsy, and one left the team in protest of Mr. Durham’s decision to proceed anyway. (A jury swiftly acquitted the lawyer.)

Now, as Mr. Durham works on a final report, the interviews by The Times provide new details of how he and Mr. Barr sought to recast the scrutiny of the 2016 Trump campaign’s myriad if murky links to Russia as unjustified and itself a crime.

The implications of drone strikes like these are something to consider.

I am sure that security organizations responsible for safeguarding places in Washington DC, like the White House and Capitol Building complex are having nightmares right now.

Some bozo buzzing National Airport with a low end consumer drone for lol’s is going to find out that security agency responses have gone up a whole bunch of notches.

And that goes for any US or other nation’s building or vehicle anywhere in the world. No need for warplanes. A swarm of a few hundred or thousand cheap drones will overwhelm any current defense at a fraction of the cost.

Directly not many, Fukushima lists 573 and Chernobly only around 50. Indirectly tens of thousands (the “liquidators” at Chernobyl, Uranium miners and people living downstream from tailings on the Navajo reservation, etc.)

My problem with nuclear energy is the false economy: insurance rates are indirectly subsidized by liability caps. ($500 million in the USA, $1.5 billion in Europe).

Chernobyl was estimated to have cost $20 billion and Fukushima around $80 billion. If nuclear plants had to insure themselves for those amounts, their rates would most likely make nuclear energy prohibitively expensive.

And as for the costs of disposal and safe storage, that bill is going to be paid by generations and generations to come.

ooops that’s NASA, however NASA and DARPA are working on this.

NERVA (nuclear engine for rocket vehicle application) was a huge program in the 1950s and 60s and was successfully tested at Jackass Flats, Nevada way back in 1964.
Planned applications included the Mars landing that NASA proposed as a follow on to Project Apollo, with NERVA initially replacing the third stage of the Saturn V launch vehicle. This was canceled, of course, by the Nixon administration. One relatively small aspect, a re-usable shuttle to ferry astronauts and material to an orbital assembly site, was continued. This was dubiously re-branded as a primary launch system and remained the US’s primary, indeed only, manned spacecraft system for over 30 years.

Nuclear is one of the safer forms of power generation, albeit not renewable. You do have the proliferation and waste storage issue though, as well as cost-cutting and bypassing safeguards issue (like, many accidents begin with that).
Fossils do have the issue of air pollution and contribution to climate change, which you do have to factor in if you are to do a body count.

Yep. Also, well-developed grid storage should be a builtin feature of such technology, because it does make intermittent power sources (e.g. wind, solar, tidal) more sustainable.

NY Times has stopped “Bothsidesing.” I wonder why.

Contains this little gem regarding the Holocaust Memorial Day shootings: It’s OK to kill Jews if they are living in the wrong neighborhood.

The recent Palestinian attacks, including Friday night’s shooting outside a synagogue and Saturday’s shooting, have targeted Israeli settlements and settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

ooops that’s NASA, however NASA and DARPA are working on this.

Heinlein used to write these in the 50’s using zinc (i) as his reaction mass. Much more mass for volume - still higher thrust and all the other advantages from that video. OTOH, he glossed over the need to keep the propellent heated so that it was melted and would flow into the reactor for heating as reaction mass.

Then Capehart mentions MTG gunning for Trump’s VP role and Olivia says Marjorie isn’t pretty enough to be Trump’s running mate…then she says it pains her as a woman to say it, but the fact is Trump’s too shallow a person and Marjorie just doesn’t have the looks.

I have never seen a source with such high numbers. Where do you get that?

Chernobyl was estimated to have cost $20 billion and Fukushima around $80 billion. If nuclear plants had to insure themselves for those amounts, their rates would most likely make nuclear energy prohibitively expensive.

The US lost 165.1 billion USD in probably GW related climate disasters in 2022. Who has insurance to pay for that.

Yes, but your economics is bollocks.

But they are still less than the tens of thousands that die annually due to fossil fuels. The average world wide death for just coal was ~ 40K last time I checked, cancer deaths caused by transport diesel? Way more than any nuclear count you can come up with.
